Most of the women reaching 45 years of age start experiencing unpleasant symptoms like feeling at physical and mental levels like feeling of extreme heat, suffocation, restlessness, unexplained pains, irritability etc. These are called as Perimenopausal symptoms. Perimenopausal phase refers to the approximate year preceding menopause. This period is characterized by irregularity of periods mainly and is associated with the increase in weight, recurrent infections etc.
Perimenopausal symptoms can be defined as a group of unpleasant symptoms which a woman experiences just before and after cessation of periods. These symptoms include hot flushes followed by sweating, altered or hyper-sensations which take the form of feeling of pins & needles in the limbs, headaches, irritability and depression. Apart from these, many physiological symptoms also appear which include pain in joints, backache etc.
Many studies done in this regard have observed low to moderate level of anxiety, depression, social dysfunction and somatic symptoms as well as psycho-social stress in middle-aged women can lead to aggravation in the perimenopausal symptoms. Faulty lifestyle has also been observed as a trigger for menopausal symptoms.
