Union Minister Smriti Irani has strongly criticized Rahul Gandhi for his alleged "flying kiss" incident in the Lok Sabha, expressing her disapproval of his behavior during parliamentary sessions.
Speaking at an event hosted by Aaj Tak news channel, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, refrained from directly mentioning Rahul Gandhi's name but condemned the Congress leader's behavior during the recent Monsoon session of Parliament as "despicable." She made it clear that the blame rested solely on him and not on her or any other female Parliamentarians present.
While a member of the Gandhi dynasty may not hold Parliament in high regard, it's unfortunate that a female Cabinet minister has to address his behavior in this way
I refuse to engage in that discussion. The responsibility for this incident lies with him, not with me or any other woman serving our country in Parliament," Irani's remarks were quoted by India Today.
When asked about her political rivalry with Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, who secured victory in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi constituency against the then Congress President in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, downplayed the rivalry, stating that it is a natural part of politics between equals. She added, "He is the leader of his party, and I am a dedicated worker of my party (BJP)."
Rahul Gandhi's 'Flying Kiss' Controversy
After taking part in the no-confidence motion debate in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi reportedly blew a flying kiss, eliciting strong reactions from the treasury benches, Smriti Irani labeled this act as misogynistic and characterized it as "indecent," asserting that such behavior had never been witnessed in the House before.
The Congress stood by their leader, asserting that he had never displayed disrespect towards women and accused the BJP of engaging in 'indecent' behavior by accusing him of misconduct to avoid a discussion on the Manipur violence
Following this incident, BJP women MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanded "stringent action" against Gandhi for his "inappropriate gesture." In a complaint endorsed by over 20 women parliamentarians, it was alleged that Gandhi had behaved in an "indecent manner" that not only insulted the dignity of women members in the House but also tarnished the dignity of the august House itself.
