Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, is actively engaged in accident prevention measures for roads and highways. He has coordinated with the Public Expressways Authority of India (NHAI) to find and amend unsafe spots on these courses. To realize this objective, Nitin Gadkari has instructed NHAI Regional Officers (RO) and Project Directors (PD) to carry out field visits to these areas. They must inspect to ascertain the underlying reasons for these safety worries.
By the end of 2025, the Minister wants to cut down on accidents on the roads by 50%. Earlier, Nitin Gadkari highlighted that certain danger zones resulted from inaccurate project reports. He stressed that poor project documentation led to several accidents and that road construction workers needed greater training. The ROs and PDs are entrusted with the responsibility of accurately identifying these hazardous spots and devising appropriate remedies.
NHAI has identified around 4002 dangerous locations on National Highways between 2015 and 2018. Remedial actions have been taken to enhance safety at these identified points. During 2021-22, safety measures were implemented at approximately 716 locations. Long-term safety measures are being implemented in an ongoing attempt to address the remaining dangerous areas. A hazardous location, commonly referred to as a blackspot, is a site with a history of high-traffic accidents.
To swiftly enhance safety at these spots, measures such as installing signs, crossings, lighting, and more are being employed. Construction of service roads, significant crossroads, pedestrian underpasses, vehicle underpasses, flyovers, foot-over bridges, and other infrastructure are examples of initiatives for long-term safety.
Following improvements or construction, accident data is monitored over three years to assess the reduction or elimination of incidents. If a decrease is observed, the hazardous spot is considered mitigated.
