Short Description
A manned scientific submersible has been suggested for development for deep ocean exploration as part of the Deep Ocean Mission, which was started by the Government of India. Samudrayaan is the name of the project. A 'personnel sphere' for a manned submersible system with a 500 meter water depth rating had been designed and tested by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), an independent institute within the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Mild steel was utilized to design and test the Personnel Sphere, a personnel module with a 2.1-meter diameter that may be deployed in water up to 500 meters deep in the Bay of Bengal.
Just like how we have sent Chandrayaan to the moon, we are going to send people to a very deep part of the sea, to a very deep part of the Indian Ocean. And the name we have for this is Samudrayan. If you ask, now only Titan has become a big problem. Hasn't anyone of us reformed? In fact, after it became such a big problem, we are still looking at how to go in advance.
The amazing thing about this is, Titan Submersible, we are going to see Titanic, right? The distance that Titan went 3,800 meters. But the distance we want to go now is 6,000 meters.
For a particular region that no one has ever gone to, India has not sent three people in a Submarine, but in a submersible. Titan is a submersible. Similarly, India is also doing another submersible.
We are now ready to send people to a deeper region than the Titanic's depth. The cost of this entire project is, almost 4,077 crores has been allotted by the Indian government.
For this submersible alone, we have spent 350 crores to create a submersible.
For a particular region in the Indian Ocean, we are going to go in 6,000 meters, that is, 6 kilometres vertically, send three people in there alive, do some research, and come out of there again.
This is what India is preparing for now.
The first thing is, Before knowing about the Samutrayan, we need to know a few things about India. What is the total coastal line in India? How far is the beach? It is 7,517 kilometres away. We should not measure it from Kanyakumari. If you start from Gujarat, you can go through different States, like Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari,
If we go up, Again Tamilnadu and the top, Andra Pradesh will be there. Odisha, West Bengal, and so on. This length is 7,517 kilometres. We have such a deep and long coastline. There are 9 coastal states, 1,382 islands belong to India. 1,382 islands. It is 2-3 nautical miles from our land border. It is India's own coastline. It is not just Marina Beach. Fishermen also come from Marina Beach. It is also ours. There are such deep coastal areas. It is 7,517 kilometres long. It expands beyond that. For each country, there will be some property area in the ocean. It is India's own coastline. In such deep coastal areas, we are talking about the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. There are more rare life forms in the Indian Ocean. There are rare minerals under the sea.
We have taken the minerals above the sea. If we take the minerals under the sea, like Nickel, Iron, Magnese, if we take all these out, we can do the needs of our country, like smartphone, phone, laptops, and many other technologies in India. We have identified a particular space for this in the Indian Ocean. It is not easy to take out the minerals in this area or do esearch in this area. We need equipment. It is not easy to go deep into the ocean. We talked about Titan earlier. It is difficult to go deep into the ocean than to go to the moon. We go to the moon when there is no atmosphere.
But when we go deep into the ocean, there is a pressure of 4000 elephants. It is difficult to go deep into the ocean without breaking the submarines. We started this challenge in 2021.
We launched a project called Samudrayan. We decided to create a blue economy. We decided to take out the minerals in the sea. We decided to utilize this place for the betterment of the people.
All these are our property. But it is in the water. We should not affect the environment. That is a different topic. Let us talk about why the government is doing this. Samudrayan project was launched to use these minerals for the betterment of the country.
The head of this project is National Institute of Ocean Technology. They have created a submersible called MATSYA 6000.Just like how Ocean Gate has created the Titan, India has also created MATSYA 6000. Matsya is an avatar among the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. Matsya is the first avatar of Lord Vishnu where he lived under the sea. That name was given to this submersible. 6000 is the journey distance of this MATSYA submersible. MATSYA 6000 was launched in 2019.
A few days ago, we tested whether it can go up to 300 meters in Chennai. We were successful. We started with 300 meters. A company in Norway gave us a certification. This submarine is safe for 300 meters. It can go in without humans. There is a test for 600 meters. They will go further. We can research for 6000 meters only if we pass this certification. Titan's submersible has a big problem that they don't pass this certification. They said that the submersible broke due to pressure. The people inside would have died in seconds. We are following the certification to ensure that this doesn't happen.
Another problem with Titan is that the hull should have a sphere shape. It should be submersible in a sphere shape. So that the pressure is equally distributed. The pressure is equally distributed in a ball. Ocean Gate's founder changed it to a cylinder shape so that more people can go inside which will create more profit for Ocean Gate. This is the reason for the pressure to build up and implode. So that we don't make those mistakes. NEOT has made it in a proper sphere shape.
Its main goal is that it can hold under the ocean for 12 hours in a normal setting. In case of an emergency, If the MATSYA was lost, For several days, Titan was left as it was missed on the radar. If this MATSYA 6000 is missing, For surviving the next 96 hours, Emergency equipment is kept inside. At the same time, to find out where it is, they have made a simple idea. They have placed a floating device on top. The feature in this MATSYA is, The device is at the top wherever the device goes, even though the submersible was missed on the radar, the floating device will be attached to the MATSAY. If we see the floating device, we will know where the MATSYA is. They have done such things.
To go inside, it will take 4 hours to reach a depth of 6,000 meters. After going inside, there will be robotic arms. 3 people can go inside. We can do research using these robotic arms. Again, it will take 4 hours to go inside.
It will take 4 hours to research the depth of the ocean. To come up from there, it will take nother 4 hours. They are planning for 12 hours. The important thing is, some countries in the world are doing deep sea exploration. Just like there are very few countries that have gone to the moon, there are very few countries that have gone to the deep ocean. US, Russia, France, Japan, and China. These 5 countries have gone to the deep ocean. In this list, this Samudrayan project is to take India to this list. If we realize that these minerals are useful to us, it will be beneficial to us. It is a huge space. They have confirmed that there are many minerals in it. If we can use it for our country if we can sell it for commercial products, there is a strong chance that our economy will boost. There are 3 phases to this. The first phase is to go inside in 2026.
The second phase is to do research. After going inside, there will be a big process to get permission from the government. We need to know the moon better. Can we live there? Is there any way to live there?
Is Elon Musk going to Mars for nothing? Humans always thought to use the resources there. or how we can benefit from being there. So, we are doing this in that way. But at this moment, I want to ask you a question. Three of them are going to go inside. They will definitely get a place in our books. They will ask in science books. Who was the first Indian to go to the deep sea? They will definitely become important people to read. But in case, if you get a ticket to go to such a deep area, will you go or not?
