The recent reports of the passing of Zimbabwean cricket legend Heath Streak sent shockwaves across social media, eliciting surprise from fans and experts alike.
In an unexpected turn of events, former Zimbabwean fast bowler Henry Olonga has furnished substantial proof that Heath Streak is alive and in good health.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Olonga shared a screenshot of his WhatsApp conversation with Streak, offering reassurance with the statement, "I can confirm that the rumors of Heath Streak's demise have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He's very much alive, as he shared on his X account
Ironically, Olonga had initially posted news of Streak's passing earlier in the day, expressing his condolences with a heartfelt message: "Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. Look forward to meeting you when my bowling spell concludes," as mentioned on his X account
In addition to Olonga, Zimbabwe captain Sean Williams, India's premier spinner R Ashwin, and VVS Laxman also expressed their sorrow but subsequently deleted their posts upon learning of Olonga's confirmation.
Heath Streak enjoyed a distinguished cricketing career, featuring in 65 Tests and 189 ODIs for Zimbabwe between 1993 and 2005, amassing over 450 international wickets. Revered for his all-round abilities as a fast-medium bowler and a dependable lower-order batsman, Streak became the first Zimbabwean bowler to achieve 100 wickets in ODIs. He also held the distinction of being the first cricketer from Zimbabwe to reach 100 wickets in both Test and ODI formats.
Following his retirement as a player, Streak transitioned to coaching and was associated with various teams and franchises. He served as the bowling coach for Bangladesh's national cricket team and later assumed the role of head coach. However, his coaching career took an unfortunate turn in 2021 when he received an eight-year ban from all cricket-related activities by the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to his involvement in corrupt practices.
Heath Streak's innovative cricketing strategies, such as his unique run-up from behind the umpire, which left very little time for batsmen to react or adjust, will be fondly remembered and missed by cricket enthusiasts worldwide
