DATA PROTECTION BILL
Union IT Minister Ashwani Vaishnav on Thursday introduced the (Digital Data) Protection Bill 2023 in the Lok Sabha to protect personal data.
When the Modi government came in 2014, the government was worried that India's data is scattered in all the countries. And the coming era is of digital. Every day something new is being added in the digital age.
Right now we are working in 4G and in coming days 5G will move towards all cities. So the data will be collected more and its speed will be very fast due to which the demand for new data centers will increase further.
The biggest concern was that all the data of India was being stored in America and we have been hearing incidents of data theft. All our private and public things and more importantly all our banks and the data of Defense Ministry and other departments were also lying in data centers outside the country.
It was the goal of the Government of India to collect all these data in our country and to keep the data collected in the future in the periphery of India.
Under all these schemes, the Government of India had presented the Data Protection Bill in the Lok Sabha, in which many information and fines and some other things which came under the category of Cyber Law, were amended again in 2023, this bill was presented in the Lok Sabha. Has been done .
The fine in the old bill was ₹500 crores and in the new bill it has been reduced to ₹250 crores. There will be a black and white list for sharing data of Indians with foreign companies. The tussle was going on for a long time regarding its provisions. The Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of IT has recommended passing the bill.
Meanwhile, Tanmay Singh of Internet Freedom Foundation said that the consent of the users has been clarified to a great extent in the new bill. The misconceptions about this in the old bill have been removed. However, the opinion of experts is divided on the protection of users' data deposited with the government.
Till now there are about 350 data centers operating in India which is very less and India needs about 40000 data centers. So that the data of Indians can be secured and collected. For this, the Government of India has provided a subsidy of ₹ 72000 crores to encourage data centers so that India's data centers can operate smoothly and contribute to the Indian economy.
