Celebrating Engineers Day 2023: Jharkhand's Remarkable Strides in Green Energy
Introduction
Every year, on 15th September, Engineers Day is celebrated to honor the indomitable spirit of engineers and their pivotal role in nation-building. The date holds special significance as it marks the birth anniversary of M Visvesvaraya, a visionary engineer who was awarded both the Bharat Ratna and British Knighthood for his contributions. Engineers are the unsung heroes working tirelessly to combat the challenges posed by nature, especially in the face of escalating global warming. This article delves into the innovative endeavors of engineers, the burgeoning green energy sector, and the promising developments in Jharkhand.
Jharkhand's Strides in Green Energy
In a significant stride towards sustainability, Jharkhand has etched its name in the annals of green energy history. Notably, the state is set to produce engines that run on hydrogen fuel, a clean and efficient source of energy. These groundbreaking engines will be manufactured in Jamshedpur, marking Jharkhand as the first state in India to undertake this eco-friendly initiative. The project is a collaboration between TCPL Green Energy Energy Solution, a joint venture of Tata Motors and Tata Cummins, and the Government of Jharkhand.
Key Highlights of the Project
- An MoU has been inked to establish the country's first hydrogen fuel industry in Jamshedpur, with operations set to commence in March 2024.
- The facility will produce a range of products, including hydrogen internal combustion engines, fuel agnostic engines, advanced chemistry batteries, H2 fuel cells, and H2 fuel delivery systems, primarily designed for heavy vehicles. The total investment in this endeavor amounts to Rs 354.28 crore.
Advantages of Hydrogen Fuel
Hydrogen fuel offers several advantages over traditional fuels:
- High Efficiency: Hydrogen fuel boasts higher efficiency compared to conventional fuels, making it an attractive choice.
- Energy Efficiency: It is energy-rich, ensuring optimal power generation.
- Eco-Friendly: Hydrogen fuel plays a pivotal role in curbing pollution, offering a sustainable alternative to petrol and diesel.
Dr. Kirti's Wetland and Fog Research
Dr. Kirti Abhishek, an Associate Professor of Civil and Engineering Engineering at BIT Mesra, is diligently working on conserving wetlands. Currently, his research focuses on two wetlands—one in Begusarai, Bihar, and another in Nawabganj, Uttar Pradesh. These wetlands have been recognized by the international organization Ramsar for their role in water recharge. Dr. Kirti's research aims to understand the impact of these wetlands over the past three decades and their significance in maintaining water resources.
Additionally, Dr. Kirti is conducting research on the formation of fog from Punjab to Kolkata, identifying regions experiencing increasing fog levels. Simultaneously, he promotes afforestation efforts to combat this issue.
A Young Scientist's Remarkable Journey
Hailing from Ranchi, Dr. Kirti Abhishek pursued post-doctoral studies in China with the support of the United Nations. During his tenure, he received the prestigious Young Scientist Award. Returning to BIT Mesra in 2012, he has continued to contribute significantly to the field of environmental research.
Dr. Smita's Eco-Friendly Building Designs
Dr. Smita Mishra, Head of the Department of Architecture and Planning at BIT Mesra, is leading a team dedicated to developing eco-friendly buildings. Their primary focus lies in creating structures that seamlessly blend with the environment, fostering a sense of greenery and sustainability. The team designs a wide range of buildings, from homes to auditoriums and hospitals, with the utmost care to minimize their environmental impact. Their goal is to preserve nature while enhancing the quality of life for people.
In conclusion, Engineers Day serves as a reminder of the remarkable contributions of engineers to society. Jharkhand's pioneering steps in green energy, along with the dedicated research efforts of individuals like Dr. Kirti Abhishek and Dr. Smita Mishra, exemplify the innovative spirit of engineers. Their work not only addresses the challenges of today but also paves the way for a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
Let's celebrate Engineers Day by acknowledging and supporting these incredible advancements in engineering and environmental conservation!
