A young woman named Lubdi Devi died in 1930 following her delivery in Mathura. A few years later, a girl named Shanthi Devi was born in Delhi, approximately 148 KM away from Mathura. When Shanthi Devi turned four years old, she wasn't speaking like other children her age. Her parents became very worried and feared that she might be mute. However, she gradually started speaking and claimed that she was a married woman from Mathura, and her husband's name was Ketharnath, a shopkeeper from the same place. She refused to accept her present parents and home as her own and expressed a strong desire to go to Mathura to be with her original family. Her parents initially dismissed her claims as a prank, but she continued to talk about her past life even at school, which caught the attention of some curious teachers.
These teachers decided to investigate Shanthi Devi's claims further and sought permission from her current parents to enquire with the person she claimed to be her husband, Mr. Ketharnath. Shanthi Devi provided the proper address of Ketharnath, and the teachers sent him a letter detailing her version of their marriage and her subsequent death after childbirth. They also asked him to visit Delhi if these events had indeed taken place. When Ketharnath received the letter, he was astonished to find that everything mentioned in it was 100% genuine. His current wife also read the letter and learned about the death of his first wife, Lubdi Devi, on the 10th day after giving birth to a son. Intrigued, she decided to accompany him to Delhi, along with Lubdi Devi's son. To test Shanthi Devi's claims, Ketharnath pretended to be his elder brother when they arrived at Shanthi Devi's house in Delhi. However, to everyone's surprise, she recognized him as her husband and touched his feet, just as Lubdi Devi used to do. This convinced everyone present that Shanthi Devi was indeed the reincarnation of Lubdi Devi, including Kedarnath and his second wife, who were shocked by the entire experience. Kedarnath took Shanthi Devi to another room and asked her several questions about their private life, and she answered each one with great accuracy, leaving him astonished and satisfied.
Initially, Shanthi Devi's parents, relatives, and neighbors treated this news as a joke. However, as she continued to recount incidents from her previous life with great diligence and accuracy, they became gradually convinced. The story was eventually published in newspapers and gained popularity at that time.
After reading about this case, several doctors, paramedical experts, and researchers approached Shanthi Devi to interview her, and they all became fully convinced of her claims. Mahatma Gandhiji also heard about the news and decided to send a delegation of 15 experts to investigate the matter further. They took Shanthi Devi to Mathura, where Lubdi Devi had lived with her husband. To their astonishment, she recognized Ketharnath's elder brother and other relatives present at the railway station and addressed them by their names. This convinced the members of the delegation about the authenticity of Shanthi Devi's claims, and they submitted a report to Mahatma Gandhiji. In 1935, Mahatma Gandhiji certified this case as the 15-member team had presented 24 trustworthy proofs confirming that Shanthi Devi was the reincarnation of Lubdi Devi.
