India's IT Minister Warns Against Proliferation of "Disturbing" Deepfake Video Involving an Actress

A deepfake video featuring the popular actress Rashmika Mandanna has recently come under intense scrutiny, sparking concerns about its potential for spreading misinformation.
This video, which surfaced on different virtual entertainment stages, portrays a created artificial intelligence-produced cut showing Mandanna in a dark dress as she enters a lift. It's crucial to note that the first film highlights English Indian powerhouse Zara Patel, who has a significant following of more than 400,000 on Instagram.
Because of this disturbing turn of events, India's Data Innovation Pastor, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has taken to Twitter to give a harsh admonition and update, looking to battle the spread of falsehood
He underscored, "The Government, under the IT rules introduced in April 2023, is firmly committed to ensuring the safety and trust of all DigitalNagriks using the internet. It is now a legal obligation for online platforms to ensure that no misinformation is allowed to persist."
Chandrasekhar further clarified that online platforms must promptly remove reported instances of misinformation within a 36-hour timeframe. Non-compliance with this rule carries the risk of legal action under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
Emphasizing the gravity of deepfake technology as a potent source of misinformation, Chandrasekhar added, "Deepfakes represent the latest and, even more dangerously, a more harmful form of spreading false information. Online platforms must address this issue."
Rashmika Mandanna, the actress at the center of this deepfake controversy, has expressed her distress and urgency to address the situation. In her statement, she shared, "I'm profoundly disturbed by the dissemination of this deepfake video highlighting me. This is terrifying, for me as well as for anybody powerless to the potential mischief brought about by the abuse of technology."
Mandanna focused on the requirement for cooperative exertion inside the local area to battle this issue and keep additional people from encountering wholesale fraud.
Famous entertainer Amitabh Bachchan has additionally advocated Mandanna, supporting legitimate activity against the viral deepfake video.
